This is a relatively gentrified, quiet area with most homes having been constructed after 1960 belonging to families, established professionals, and retirees. Due to the neighbourhoods placement on the banks of the Haro Strait, many properties are afforded unobstructed panoramic ocean views, with architecture varying from quaint vintage bungalows to sizeable estates often displaying a contemporary West coast style.

While Arbutus teems with recreational activities within walking distance, the walk score of 19% is not especially high. Trips by bicycle are common, with the downtown core being a pleasant 30-minute ride away. That said, most errands require much less effort with the use of a car, though with a transit score of 55%, residents can be assured Victoria's excellent public transportation system is at their service.

For a bite out, a few drinks, or some groceries, Cadboro Bay Village and University Heights Shopping centre are 5-minutes away by car. Additionally, Victoria’s downtown core with its abundance of restaurants, bars, and clubs is a quick 15-20 minute taxi or bus ride away.

Royal Jubilee Hospital and Victoria General Hospital are approximately 12 and 20-minute drives away respectively.

Access to the mainland or to international destinations are a breeze; Victoria International Airport is about 30 minutes and BC Ferry Terminal is only a 35-minute drive. Float plane service from Victoria’s inner harbour to downtown Vancouver is a 25-minute drive, as are the Coho and Clipper ferries to Seattle, Washington.

Post-secondary education is all easily accessible by car and bus with the beautiful University of Victoria campus approximately 3 minutes away, 10 and 25 minutes to Camosun College Lansdowne and Interurban campuses respectively, while Royal Roads University can be reached within 35 minutes.

Families young and old will be pleased with the community’s junior and senior care and educational offerings including Arbutus Grove Children’s Centre, Frank Hobbs Elementary School, Arbutus Global Middle School, Mount Douglas Secondary School, as well as historic site and seniors activity centre, The Goward House.

Arbutus Parks & Recreation

From rugged, rocky shores, to secluded sandy beaches and an abundance of massive trees, Arbutus is undoubtedly West coast. Many areas are highly wooded, often giving streets a rural feel. Arbutus Cove Park, Hollydene Park, and Queen Alexandra Cove Beach are all secluded sandy beaches accessed on foot down lovely wooded trails or boardwalks; each are treasured local haunt providing residents with access to the water, and rocky outcrops perfect for casting a line into the usually calm waters of the Haro Strait. The beautiful University of Victoria campus with its abundance of trails, recreational facilities, and park spaces including a sizeable dog park and the Finnerty Gardens is within walking and biking distance as well. If some higher altitudes are in order, Mount Douglas and its extensive trail system perfect for walking, hiking, and trail running is but 15-minutes by bicycle, or 5-minutes by car. Golfers will find no shortage of challenge nearby with Cedar Hill Golf Course, Uplands Golf Club, and Mount Douglas Golf Club all an easy 5-minute drive away. For the boaters in the family, the Cattle Point boat launch, and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club at the Cadboro Bay marina, and the Oak Bay marina are no more than a 10-minute drive.
